Advent Study Day 16

Scripture: 1 John 1:4-7

We write this to make our joy complete.

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Observation

  • This is hard hitting. “If we claim to have fellowship and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”
  • Light vs. darkness is real. You can’t be in the dark if you are in the light.

Application

  • There is no darkness in God at all. If we fellowship with Him, we must walk in the light. That means we must consciously decide to walk in the light — and stay away from darkness — constantly.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the light that you provide. It can be easy to slip into the darkness — and to pretend to be in fellowship with you and still be in the dark. Help me to always be aware of the difference between the light and dark, and help me to always choose the light. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
