Scripture: Mark 12: 28-30
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'”
- A teacher of the law would know a lot about the law — at least what’s in it. But this teacher’s question (what’s the most important commandment?) was one that a teacher of the law couldn’t answer.
- Jesus taught a lot in parables. But in this case He was very clear — loving the Lord with everything you have is the most important thing.
- Love the Lord your God. Everything else stems from that. If you love God, you will put Him first in your life. And then you will please Him with actions and works.
Heavenly Father, Jesus told us that loving you with all our heart, soul, mind and strength is the most important commandment. May I always put you and your word above everything else. I ask for your help to do everything I do as though I’m working for you, and not for man. Thank you for first loving us, and for your word and Spirit that guides us. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
