Holiday weekend + pizza bread

Happy Labor Day! Hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend. 🙂

The weather here in northwest Florida is far from ideal — it’s rainy and windy thanks to Tropical Storm Lee. Thankfully, Lee stayed away long enough for us to head over to Tallahassee for the first Florida State football game of the season!

We left for Tally on Saturday morning for the 3:30 p.m. game. We ate breakfast at home, but when we were about half an hour away from Tallahassee, we were struck with a craving for Pitaria, one of our most favorite Tallahassee restaurants. So the first stop was there, where we both ordered roast beef pitas with pita fries and Greek fries respectively.

After we ate, we headed over to the stadium to meet our friend Ryan and head into the stadium to watch the game!

The game got off to somewhat of a rocky start, but our Seminoles shut out the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 34-0.

After the game, we stopped by the store in the stadium to look at the available apparel and then headed out for pizza before making the trek back home. All in all, a good first game day of the season. 🙂

On Sunday, we woke up to some nasty rain so we stayed home most of the day, except for a quick trip to Publix to get food supplies for the next two days (we had almost nothing in our house).

I also made pizza bread! Recipe is available here.

Dough before...

I made the dough from scratch in the stand mixer.

... and after.

I stuffed it with marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese, parmesan, pepperoni, fresh garlic and green peppers, and popped it in the oven.

toppings... er, stuffing

My version turned out to be more like a stromboli… or really long calzone… because of the extra ingredients (the recipe I used only calls for the cheese, marinara sauce and pepperoni). It was my first time making bread (without using the breadmaker), and it came out great!

We devoured about half of the stromboli pizza bread, and I followed up with a few scoops of Breyers chocolate cookies & cream ice cream (Breyers was BOGO at Publix!).

Today, the tropical weather continued. We even lost power for a few hours in the afternoon. We did manage to hit the outlet malls earlier in the day (I had a Banana Republic giftcard burning a hole in my wallet!). Charlie didn’t like us leaving him home during the weather mess, though.

"Please tell the thunder and lightning to stop. Thanks."

How did you spend your holiday weekend?
