Advent Study Day 20

Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Observation

  • It’s not just me; sin easily entangles all of us. But we don’t have to succumb to that entanglement if our eyes are fixed on Jesus.
  • Jesus’ joy is what got him through the trials and tribulations he endured. We can have that joy, too!

Application

  • This is a good one for me, especially right now. I need to not spend my time thinking about worldly things. Instead, I should focus on Jesus and put that above everything else — and let Him into every facet of my life (including work). When I start to dwell on “problems,” I should change my thoughts to be about Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the joy that you provide to us. Help me to accept that from you; to not focus on the thoughts that entangle me but instead set my eyes on You and let myself have that peace and joy that only comes from Heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
